There is a lot of recycling thrown into plastic bags, which the recycling company that the City of Atlanta uses does not accept – these bags will simply get taken to the landfill.
The following, in fact, all go to the landfill:
·Any glass – City does not currently process it in its single-stream program
·Anything in sealed/tied up plastic bags
·Plastic shopping bags (the thin plastic kind)
The recycling company takes non-recyclable materials to the landfill AFTER sorting and rejecting these items at their facility, thus carrying it twice and increasing their business costs to have to cart these items off. In order to manage the costs our association carries for recycling and to keep the recycling companies solvent, we encourage building residents to recycle in a way that maximizes the program’s effectiveness.
